AFC Fylde Match Report and Reaction

A first home pre-season friendly saw the Tigers take on newly promoted National League side AFC Fylde at The Project Solar Stadium in a game filled with action with the newly crowned National League North Champions running out comfortable winners.

The start of the match saw both teams having an even share of possession with a few sights of goal. This changed in the 14th minute when Tom Whelan scored from close range to put the visitors ahead.

Around the 30th minute mark, the away side had a flurry of chances, none of which were converted; yet there were emerging signs of Hyde growing into the game.

This culminated in a series of efforts for the Tigers. A free kick in minute 34 was narrowly missed before several over chances went astray.

On the stroke of half time however, Cedric Main doubled Fylde’s lead, slotting home a pass flashed across the face of goal.

Many changes were made for the visitors, with 9 substitutions being made at half time. None for the home side.

The second half started similarly to the first, with both teams looking positive. A curled effort for Fylde was met by a wonderous save from Jordan Eastham in the 55th minute, with the resulting corner being cleared away.

Hyde managed to pull a goal back from the following passage of play, as James Kirby lobbed the goalkeeperwho was caught off his line, from outside the box.

Five changes then came from the Tigers, several trialists, Edy Maieco, Mo Wassa, and Tom Clare replacing some tired legs across the field.

The goal shifted momentum in the home side’s favour, with Hyde controlling the play either side of the second hydration break, their efforts building to a headed effort that whistled ever so slightly wide of the post.

In the 74th minute though, Fylde managed another goal; Aidan Wainwright pounced on a wayward header in the Hyde defence, striking it off the crossbar and in.

Clare signs in

We can announce the signing of striker Tom Clare.

The 26 year old came through he ranks at home town club Barnsley and began his professional career at Bradford City.

He also represented Pontefract Collieries and most recently Macclesfield were he was part of the league winning side two years ago

In safe hands!

Hyde United are absolutely thrilled to announce the return of goalkeeper Jordan Eastham to the squad.

Jordan is no stranger to the Tigers, having first made a massive impact during a highly successful loan spell back in January 2024. During that run, he commanded the box across 20 appearances for Hyde, securing an impressive 8 clean sheets. Now, following a two-year stint with Ashton United, he is back on a permanent basis and ready to get between the sticks.

First-team Manager Michael Clegg emphasized the importance of the signing to the squad’s defensive foundation:

“A permanent keeper was a priority to bring stability to the team. We know Jordan, and we know exactly how good he is. With his previous experience here and his existing chemistry with the players, he’ll slot straight back in and get right to work.”

Welcome back to the Tigers, Jordan!

Double Swoop for Cleggy

Manager Michael Clegg has boosted his midfield options by signing Ben Hough from Warrington Rylands and the experienced Dan Gardner.

Hough comes in after just missing out on promotion with Warrington Rylands, as they lost on penalty kicks to Hednesford Town, in the playoff final.

Hough said ”I felt like it was time to move on from Rylands and Cleggy is someone I know well having worked with him at Rylands and Ashton”

Gorton born Gardner has over 316 professional appearances including 228 in the Football League with the likes of Chesterfield, Tranmere and Wigan.  Having started his career at Droylsden he has then progressed up through the leagues and joins us from Radcliffe FC.

Gardner said ”Really looking forward to getting started, this is my first time working with Cleggy but I know lots of players who have played under him and they can’t speak highly enough.”

On his new signings the gaffer said:-

”Ben is someone I have worked with before so I know what i’m getting with him so i’ delighted that’s he agreed to come to s

”Dan he’s a top top player, I watched him a few times last year for Radcliffe and he’s still a very good footballer and the fact he lives just up the road really helps and he will bring that leadership and experience to the group”

Silva Lining up for the Tigers

We are pleased to make another addition to the squad for the 2026/27 season with the signing of Joao Silva from Guiseley

The 22 Year Old, who has won five caps for Sao Tome and Principe joins after making 40 appearances at Nethermoor last season, having previously been with Farsley Celtic.

Joao said ”I’m looking forward to meeting all my team mates and playing on this pitch”

Cleggy said on his new recruit, ”He impressed for Guiseley against us last year and it was one of the most impressive wing performances I’ve seen in a while. We didn’t think he’d become available because we knew he was under contract at Guiseley. But then we got wind he was coming over to Manchester  this summer, and travel was a problem for him, so we were straight in on it and we got the deal done very early, He’s going to be very exciting, and we’re delighted to have him in.”

Kirby goes to Hyde

We are delighted to announce the signing of centre forward James Kirby.

James came through the academy here at Hyde and made his senior debut for the Tigers in 2013, at the age of just 17 in a Cheshire Senior Cup tie at home to Cheadle Town.

He was part of the squad for our second season the National League and made his league debut early in 2014 away at Southport.  He made a total of 18 appearances for the Tigers, mainly off the bench.

Since then he has plyed his trade all over including at Colwyn Bay, in Sweden at Sandvikens and Ostersund, most recently he had a spell in the Premier League in Malta at Marsaxlokk and is now back in the UK where manager Michael Clegg has won the race for his signature.

Kirby said ”It’s good to be back after 13 years, after five years abroad I am ready for a new challenge in the UK and i’m raring to go.”

Clegg said on his new striker ”We kept in touch while he’s been over in Scandinavia. In terms of his profile, he’s an old-fashioned number nine. He runs the channels, he’s big and strong, he scores goals, he’s brave, he’s good with his back to goal, he presses well, and he’s good at running in behind.

Above all else, he’s a top, top guy and a good teammate, so we’re absolutely delighted to have him.

He’s coming at a great age. He’s coming here to score goals, and he still wants to make a name for himself in England.”

Mo Wassa signs

Michael Clegg has added to his midfield options by securing the signing of Mo Wassa.

Wassa signs from Darwen FC, where he was nicknamed “Magic Mo,” was a key player for the Salmoners, having featured in nearly every match for the club since he signed in January 2025 from Route One Rovers.

Mo said ”It’s a new challenge for me, a new club I am looking forward to the challenge of stepping up a few levels.”

On his own style he said ”I’m a box to box midfielder, can also play the six and like to link up with the front players

Cleggy said ” I was made aware of him last summer. I went watching Darwen in a friendly, he was by far the best player on pitch

So we ended up getting around to watching him five, six times. I just think he can make the step up, I like everything about him as a player, I like his personality on the pitch, I like how he receives the ball, I like how he’s positive and plays forward.

So it’s going to be interesting to see how he finds the step up in intensity and with better players around him, but I’m hoping he can be another one of kind of a little gem we find. It’s something I’ve done over the years, and I’m hoping Mo can be one of the next ones, but he’s going to have to come in and graft because we’ve got a decent squad. So first and foremost, he’s going to have to nail that, but I think we could have a decent player on our hands.
