Former Tiger Commits To Next Season

We are delighted to announce that former Tiger and fans favourite, Janni Lipka, has committed to the Tigers for the coming season.

Janni was one of the first names on the teamsheet come match days. He signed in November 2016 and made his debut at home to Ossett Town. Spending two and a half seasons at the club, he made 118 appearances and netted 4 times, before taking a year out of football to travel the world.

He was also part of the squad when the Tigers had one of their most successful seasons, winning promotion and playing in the first round of the FA Cup proper in the 2017/18 season.

From The Gaffer

“We are delighted to bring Janni back to the club. I’ve been in constant contact with him over the last year where he’s been travelling. We all know what he adds on the pitch and off the pitch he’s a humble, hardworking lad who I have a lot of time for. He had some great understandings with players such as Pratty and he will hit the ground running with us.

We have put a lot of focus into the recruiting down the spine of the team. I’m hopeful we can get another 1 or 2 new signings committed to us in the next week or so. We will keep fans informed as best we can with all the incoming players and any outgoings.”

Welcome Home Janni

Passing Of Former Director Of Football

Hyde United are saddened to learn that former Football Director, Ted Davies, has recently passed away. Ted was brought on to the Board in 2010 by then owner, John Manship, to provide a closer link between the playing and administrative side.

Ted had a long career as a respected Football Scout with the likes of Manchester City, Middlesbrough, QPR, Chelsea and Charlton Athletic and is credited as spotting a young Gary Lowe at the start of his professional playing career, later teaming up together at Hyde during the memorable Conference North championship season of 2011/12.

Our sincere condolences to Ted’s wife, Ania, and family.

Launch Of Our Online Prediction Sheet

Here is another way to get involved and help support the Football Club, and possibly win some cash.

Most of you will be familiar with our Prediction Sheet that we run during the season, this is the paper format. With a major league starting up this weekend, the Bundesliga, we have launched our online Prediction Sheet.

This is in no way connected to the normal paper format we run during the season, the prize monies from that is separate and will be carried over when it starts up again.

Monies generated from our online Prediction Sheet will go towards funding the prize fund for itself. Full details of the rules and how to enter are on our online club shop,https://shop.hydeunited.co.uk/#!/Bundesliga-Online-Prediction-Sheet-Saturday-16th-May/p/198181190

Thank you for your support.

A Big Thanks For Supporting Our Virtual Games

Yesterday was the last of our virtual games, so we would like to take the opportunity to thank not only our amazing supporters but also those people who purchased virtual items from our online club shop.

The money has helped the football club keep the lights on. No one knows how all this will pan out or when football will be permitted to start again, so this has gone a long way to helping secure the football clubs future.

The virtual games have brought in just over £5k to the club and with the help we are seeking from the government, we hope to keep things ticking over until we are able to bring monies into the club through the hiring out of our 3G pitch and competing again in the league.

These are hard times for many people, not only the football club, but if you would still like to donate, and only if you are in a position to do so, you can through our donation page https://hydeunited.co.uk/donations/

We look forward to welcoming you back to Ewen Fields Stadium in the near future, but for now we hope you are your family stay safe and stay well.

Mark Worthington In Memory

Today, at this uncertain time for everyone, the Hyde United Board would like to remember the anniversary of the passing of Academy Director, Mark Worthington.

Mark was a visionary, passionate about providing an education facility and opportunities for young students, something he was dedicated and successful at over many years. Hyde United are determined to carry on that legacy in the best way we can.

Our thoughts are with Helen and all Mark’s family and friends on this poignant occasion

The Club Shows Their Thanks To The NHS

To show our support to the NHS and the fantastic work they are doing the football club now have a billboard sign along the A57, Hyde Road, just past Belle Vue, thanking the NHS.

We had the opportunity to do this from Alight Media, who have digital advertising boards around the country. Something we jumped at and put into action last Friday, and by the Saturday our advert was live for all to see.

The billboard is double sided and we appear on both sides as the adverts scroll round.

We are very grateful to Alight Media for allowing us to do this.

Our Last Virtual Game Of The Season

This coming Saturday would normally have been our last game of the 2019/20 season, away to Bamber Bridge, had our season not been Null and Voided.

However, continuing with our Virtual Match Days, where we remain unbeaten in the League, we will be having our final Virtual League game of the season. Which will again be on our Twitter account from 3pm on Saturday, https://twitter.com/hydeunited  along with commentary and game highlights.

There are again virtual items you can purchase on our club shop for the game, to help support the club and keep the lights on, http://shop.hydeunited.co.uk/#!/Bamber-Bridge-Virtual-Away-Game/c/46841334/offset=0&sort=normal

Thank you for your support so far at this difficult time for the Football Club, it is appreciated and goes a long way to ensuring we will see you all again next season.

Hyde United’s oldest ex-player dies just short of 100th birthday

THE war brought Blackpool striker Cyril Lawrence to Hyde United. He was one of a clutch of professionals who made their way to Ewen Fields when the Football League season was called off on September 3, 1939, when large gatherings were banned under the Emergency Powers Act.

Playing alongside him at various times were Charlie Mitten and John Aston from Manchester United, Alf Lythgoe from Huddersfield, and Joe Fagan, the man who would manage Liverpool to European Cup, league championship and League Cup success in 1984.

Cyril remembered him fondly, recalling: “I travelled to games with Joe, taking the tram in from Manchester. Club president William Bradley was landlord of the White Lion and Joe and I would stop off there for a lemonade which Mr Bradley would make into a shandy.

“Joe Fagan was a smashing lad and a good pal to me. And he had a typical Scouse sense of humour.

“After the war, while I was with Blackpool, Rochdale and Wrexham, I was allowed to train with Manchester City and when we were doing our road work, passing Southern Cemetery, Joe would point toward Princess Road and tell me he lived down there in a pre-fab.”

Cyril found Hyde United’s red shirt was a good fit. He scored 12 goals in 18 matches including two in the first leg of the Cheshire East Division play-off semi-finals which Droylsden won 7-5 on aggregate.

His most productive outing was on April 20, 1940, when he and Aston each netted a hat-trick each as Macclesfield were beaten 7-0 at Ewen Fields.

For his trouble, Cyril was paid £3 a game, but as he admitted: “I’d sometimes get an extra half-crown (12½p) if Mr Bradley thought I’d played well. He used to give me my tram fare too, although he’d often let me have ten shillings (50p) rather than whatever it really cost.”

Once the season closed, Cyril bade farewell to football until the middle of the decade. He was called up into the Royal Navy, serving in the battleship HMS King George V in the Pacific and in more than a dozen Arctic convoys to Murmansk.

His football career started at Blackpool. He never made the first team but trained alongside Stanley Matthews who he remembered as being “very tight”. “We used to play pitch-and-toss behind one of the stands,” Cyril recalled. “When the secretary called us to pick up our wages we’d all run off but Stan would stay there, rooting through the dust for odd coppers.”

In his time at Bloomfield Road Cyril lodged at a guest house owned by an aunt of the comedian Will Hay. His weekly rent paid for bed, meals and a glass of rhubarb wine to open his bowels.

After the war Cyril tried to pick up his career at Rochdale and Wrexham but injury ended his playing days.

He returned to Ewen Fields on Boxing Day 2006 after an appeal was issued to find the club’s oldest player. At the time he was a remarkably fit 86 and unveiled a plaque in the Pete O’Brien Lounge marking 100 years since Hyde United’s predecessor club, Hyde FC, moved to the ground.

Cyril came back to watch the odd match and was at the White Lion in July, 2010, when a blue plaque was unveiled commemorating the pub as the place Hyde FC was founded in 1885.

After his playing days were over, Cyril lived in his home city of Salford. He died on April 14 after contracting coronavirus on Good Friday and only two months short of his 100th birthday. He leaves Clare, his wife of 75 years, who will also be 100 in June, and daughters Elaine and Norma.
