Edy is back

Edy Maieco has re-signed for the club in time for the match against Ilkeston tomorrow

Edy’s first spell with the club was in the 2022/23 season were he made 23 appearances scoring five goals including a vital free-kick away at Nantwich, (Below), which saw us push for the playoffs that season.

Edy has been mostly playing his football at National League North side Southport

New Years message from the Chairman – Steve Hartley

Over the past few days I have been reflecting how far this great club of ours has come in the past 10 years.

10 years ago we had one team playing in the NPL on a grass surface. Then we became a community club, owned by the Supporters, and have gone from strength to strength. Thanks to the foresight of and investment by Tameside MBC we have a top class 3G artificial pitch, and in addition to the first team, we now have well over 400 junior players of all ages, a successful ladies team, and two under-18 teams with players who will hopefully progress to the Academy and continue their education with a football related qualification. This season has seen the formation of a veterans team which has opened my eyes to the potential of this club for people of all ages and ability!

Much of our success comes from the tireless work of volunteers, from the longstanding supporters who man the turnstiles and the tea bars, and clean the ground after matches, to the numerous parents who have taken up coaching roles in the junior section. We could not survive without your help and my thanks go out to you all. Thanks also to those who gave their time and materials in helping to renovate the Social Club, which now has a warm ambience when you enter. There is still more to do but we’re getting there.

We are now widely recognised as a well run club within and for the Community, but we can continue to develop further and are exploring how we may expand and include sections of the Community we are not currently reaching.

Over the past year we have been saddened to lose four former managers in Peter Wragg, Ged Coyne, Mike McKenzie and Steve Waywell, so it was an honour to celebrate the 90th birthday of Les Sutton in the Social Club last Saturday, with a number of the players who represented the club between 1977 and 1983 attending. It brought back some great memories.

On the footballing front, this season to date has seen mixed fortunes. Drew Baker and Harry Ditchfield suffered long term injuries before the season started, and we have only just welcomed Ditchy back into the squad. Following Nick Spooner’s surprise resignation in September, the board appointed Martin Coyne as the new manager with Harry Bunn returning to the club as coach, and they enjoyed instant success with a good run in the FA Cup, narrowly defeated 1-0 away at Tamworth in the 4th qualifying round, but bringing in significant prize money.

Results in recent weeks have not been so good, mainly due to individual errors, but our general football has been good without the rewards we perhaps deserved. The injury to Jack Redshaw in recent weeks has not helped. Martin and his team have been working hard both to cut out the errors and to strengthen the squad, and we will hopefully turn the corner and start to climb the table. Those attending the match at Ashton United on Boxing Day were treated to a great game of football, with the heartbreak of conceding the equalizer on the final whistle.

With our traditional New Year’s Day match being pushed back to Saturday, we welcome Ilkeston to the Project Solar Stadium, and I hope to see many of you there for what will hopefully be the start of an upturn in our fortunes.

It only remains for me to thank you for your support and to wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Message to supporters regarding fan behaviour

There has been a reported incident at the recent Boxing Day match at Ashton United involving a group of spectators (attributable to supporting Hyde United) that were stood opposite the main stand in the first half.
The FA report refers to a discriminatory comment against the match referee in the 29th minute that was loud and audible and witnessed by the Referee Observer and is now subject to a formal investigation.
Our Club has prided itself on its diversity over many years, so hearing of this type of behaviour is particularly galling to us and will simply NOT be tolerated.
It is important that this individual or individuals are identified, so if anyone has information that will help with this then you can e-mail – office@hydeunited.co.uk – or leave a voicemail on 0161 367 7273 – which will be treated in strict confidence.
Unfortunately, this is the second time in a matter of months that we have had to issue this type of message following misogynistic comments at the Tamworth FA Cup tie. For the avoidance of doubt, ALL  supporters should refrain from any aggressive, violent or threatening behaviour and this prohibits any discriminatory language relating to race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or disability.
Breaches of these regulations brings our Club into disrepute, leads to sanctions involving substantial fines and a potential of having to play matches behind closed doors.
We understand that 99.99% of our supporters are genuine and have the Club interests at heart, so we would ask for your help in this and any future instance

Lewis Rawsthorne recalled

We can confirm that Lewis Rawsthorn has been recalled from his season long loan with immediate effect by parent club Radcliffe Football Club

Lewis scored seven goals in 24 appearances across all competitions.
Manager Martin Coyne said “Whilst disappointed that Lewis had been recalled early, that’s football, he’s been great for us in his time here, I’ve loved working with him and we wish him well going forward”

Les Sutton’s 90th Birthday

Just a reminder that we are marking the forthcoming 90th birthday of one of Hyde United’s greatest ever managers, the legendary Les Sutton, as we host a celebratory evening in the Social Club on Saturday 27th December from 6pm.

We would like to invite as many of Les’s former players and contemporaries as can make the event, plus any supporters who had the pleasure of witnessing Les’s teams during two successful spells with the Tigers – 1972-74 & 1977-1983.
There will be a hot & cold buffet served, so do please come along and show your support for one of the Tigers’ greats.

Steve Waywell in Memoriam

The Board are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of former player and manager, Steve Waywell, and, on behalf of everyone at Hyde United, we send our sincere condolences to Steve’s family and friends.
Following a few seasons as a very good and reliable centre-half at Stalybridge Celtic, Steve joined the Tigers under Peter Wragg in the 84/85 season and made 46 appearances in a side that finished 4th in the League and included the likes of Phil Marsden and John Timmons.
Steve is probably best remembered at Hyde for his successful time as Manager in the mid-2000s. He’d already gained a considerable reputation with previous spells at Curzon Ashton and Horwich (later to become Leigh) RMI and the Hyde Board at the time pulled off something of a coup in persuading Steve to step down a league or two and join the Tigers.
Although unable to steer the team clear of relegation in the 2002/03 season, Steve and his assistant, Tony Ellis, set about restoring the side into an entertaining and winning outfit. With quality signings such as Neil Tolson, John O’Kane and Matty McNeil, the NPL Division One title was secured on the final day of the 03/04 season with a memorable 4-0 win against North Ferriby. We also won the Chairman’s Cup that year with a two-legged Final win over Leek Town.
That momentum carried on through the 2004/05 season as the team proved a difficult nut to crack with only 4 defeats in the league and 80 goals scored; they ultimately held off challenges from Whitby Town, Farsley Celtic and Workington, with the defining match at Home against the Cumbrians in the middle of April when a crowd of over 1300 witnessed a Tigers win thanks to a Marc Green sliced own goal in the 90th minute. The Manchester Premier Cup was also won that season with a barnstorming 5-4 win against Maine Road FC at Boundary Park.
The MPC was retained in the 05/06 season with a 2-1 win against Droylsden and we finished a creditable 11th in the recently-formed Conference North division. After 8th and 9th places respectively in the next two seasons, Steve finished his spell at Hyde with a proud record and will rightly be remembered as one of the most successful managers in our history.
There will be a minute’s applause in celebration of Steve at our Home match v Cleethorpes Town on Saturday, 20th December, so please come along and help the Club pay our tribute.
