In Memory of Barney Daniels

The Hyde United Board are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of former player, Barney Daniels.
Although spending most of his non-league career at Ashton United, he was a key part of our 81/82 Cheshire League treble-winning side.
A former Manchester City & Stockport County player, Barney was a strong, bustling number 9, who possessed a thunderous right foot. There was one particularly memorable goal away at Darwen, which was hit like a howitzer over the keeper, and a key goal on the run-in to the title at Curzon Ashton’s old National Park ground, as, with minutes to go, he controlled the ball on his thigh, spun on the penalty spot and drilled a shot into the bottom corner; fantastic! He also scored on that memorable day at Formby when Hyde wrapped up the title with a 4-1 win.
Though he missed a third of the season with injury, Barney scored 17 goals in 25 starts plus 12 as substitute and was part of a formidable forward line with the likes of David Holt, George Oghani and Peter Coyne.
He returned to Hurst Cross the following season as the Tigers were promoted to the Northern Premier League, but he will always be remembered as a fans’ favourite.
On behalf of everyone involved at Hyde United, our sincere condolences to Barney’s family and friends
