The Day A Star Was Born

An Article by Mike Pavasovic

BACK in September, a significant club anniversary passed by unnoticed. It was 40 years since George Oghani first took the field for us. For many of those who remember him, he will always remain Hyde United’s greatest player.

George was signed at a time when black lads were only just starting to come through at the top level. Viv Anderson was playing for Notts Forest and England, while West Brom led the way with the so-called Three Degrees: Brendon Batson, Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis.

So you can imagine the chatter among the fans before the 1-1 draw at Burscough when they learned the Tigers had signed their first black player. All we knew was that he was a young lad and had come from Bury. We didn’t even know how to pronounce his name. I wrongly assumed he was called “Ogany” as in mahogany. It didn’t take long for us to get to know him well.

George had been recommended to Hyde United by John Heap who had been secretary at Ewen Fields before moving to Gigg Lane. George, by his own admission, was a troubled youth. He might easily have slipped into a life of crime but was saved by football, by Hyde United, and, unlikely as it might sound, by Tigers manager Les Sutton.

Sutty and George had, shall we say, a tempestuous relationship. They often came close to blows in the dressing room and on more than one occasion George ripped off his shirt and insisted he wouldn’t go out for the second half. Yet he always did. And his relationship with Les, whom he clearly saw as a father figure, is still strong today.

It took seven games before George got on the scoresheet but his ability quickly became apparent. Not only was he fast and skilful, but he was strong and fearless too. By the end of the season he had hit 14 goals and come to embody the rebirth of Hyde United. In 1970, the club was on life-support having almost bankrupted itself by spending two seasons in the new Northern Premier League. As the 1980-81 campaign started the Tigers were about to reassert themselves as a power in non-league football with George Oghani leading the way.

He was top scorer in the following three seasons with 19, 32 and 28 goals respectively including five hat-tricks. His most notable performance possibly came in 3-0 FA Cup victory over Runcorn — then a major force — after which he was whisked away to Burnden Park and signed for Bolton Wanderers. Pete O’Brien brought him back to Ewen Fields for one final match on New Year’s Eve, 1989.

George will always be a Hyde United legend for people of my generation. If we had a hall of fame, he would surely be the first person in it ahead of the many other stars we’ve had since day-one way back in 1885. He personifies the inclusivity we’re so proud of, and the entertaining and attacking football we hold so dear.

If you never got the chance to see George play, just ask your nearest supporter who’s 55-plus. There are so many stories to tell of his prowess and the victories he led us to. It’s always great to see him on his periodic visits, usually with Tony Steenson and Les Sutton.

For the record, black players have been in the English game since at least 1889 when Arthur Wharton signed professional forms at Rotherham Town. The comedian Charlie Williams played for Doncaster in the Fifties. Dennis Walker made one appearance for Manchester United at the end of the 1962-63 season, while Albert Johanneson appeared on the wing for Leeds soon after, and Clyde Best was a striker for West Ham from 1968 to 1975.

Player Update

Today we have completed the signing of an experienced midfielder.

Ashley Young joins us from FC United.

Ashley joined FC United in October of last year. He was with Buxton prior to that, for a season and a half.

From The Manager:

“Ash comes into the squad and gives us a bit of experience and know how as well as being a very good footballer. With his attributes he will compliment Tonguey and Alex in there and I’m delighted to get him into the squad for the game against Whitby.”

Jamal Crawford has departed Ewen Fields Stadium.

From The Manager:

“We wish Jamal well with his next move. He’s been a fantastic lad to have around the place. He’s been frustrated with his lack of game time and I understand his decision and I hope he goes on to have a good season at his next club.”

We are also pleased to announce that we have extended Goalkeeper, Luke Mewitts, loan from Huddersfield.

Another Former Tiger Signs On Loan

Our second signing of the day is a one month loan from local rivals Ashton United, he played for the Tigers in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 season. Making 75 appearances and hitting the net 25 times.

Connor Hughes was a fans favorite in his 2 seasons here are Ewen Fields Stadium, scoring some great goals, some of which are below. He will be back with the Tigers on a months loan.

From The Manager:

“Connor will join us for an initial month and will add to the attacking options we have. We have been light at the top end of the pitch recently with injuries, illness and suspension and Connor comes in to provide another creative option. He’s impressed me in every game I’ve seen him play. He has quality on the ball which is above this level and hopefully we can get the best out of him during the month. The 3G pitch will suit him and I know he can’t wait to get started with us.”

Former Tiger Rejoins – See His Interview

We are delighted to have a former player rejoin the Tigers today.

Having been with the Tigers from the 2016/17 season through to the 2018/19 season, however only making one sub appearance in his last season with us, he has returned after a long injury layoff.

Chris Sutherland has spent the past year recovering from the injuries that plagued him through his time with the Tigers, in which he made 29 appearances and scored 3 goals. See his interview below.

From The Manager:

“We are delighted to get Chris back on board with us. He has been with us just short of a month now and he’s been training with a huge smile on his face, he’s enjoying playing again. Chris has been out a year now and has took his time building up his fitness to avoid any setbacks. It’s hard to believe he has been out that length of time with the way he has trained. He has looked sharper than ever. He will go into the squad tomorrow but we will take our time in building his game time up.”

New Signing And Player Update

Today has seen a new signing, a loan extension and some departures from the Tigers today.

We are pleased to announce the signing of right back Bradley Roscoe from Buxton FC, who will be available for selection for tomorrows home fixture against Witton Albion.

We have also extended the loan of Alex Starcenko from Guiseley for a further 2 months.

Departing from Ewen Fields are Oran Thompson, Jacko Hardacre and Cyril Owolabi.

From The Gaffer;

“Brad is a great signing for the football club. He was in the team of the year last season and he got our vote for the best right back in the league. He is young and wants to learn yet still has good experience. We have beat a lot of teams to his signature and he will go straight into the team tomorrow”

“Aleks has signed an extended loan for another 2 months. He’s got better with every game and his last 2 performances have been outstanding. He is another young player and at 18 he has a big future in the game.”

“Jacko Hardacre and Cyril Owolabi have left the football club. Oran Thompson has been recalled by Huddersfield. I can’t thank them enough for their efforts with us. These boys have helped us get to our current position and we wish them the best of luck going forward.”
