Squad Update From The Manager

Manger, Jim Gannon, gives his latest squad update.

It has been only ten days since my last squad update but so much has happened I felt it important to provide another update to give an overview of the first team player developments. I would have like to provide a squad update before Saturday’s game, as I’m sure that some of the additions and changes to the team would have surprised many. However, I felt it prudent to not make such a statement prior to an important league game.

Following last Tuesday’s game an additional two players reported injuries – Liam Tonge (thigh) and Harry Benns (Groin). Furthermore, in training on Thursday evening Kyle Brownhill suffered a calf injury. Unfortunately, this meant that we were heading into Saturday’s game without eight first team players Joe Green (groin), Jason Akiotu (hamstring), Kyle Brownhill (calf), Jack Sheratt (pelvic/hip), Chinedu Uche (ankle), Liam Tonge (thigh), Harry Benns (Groin) and Jonah Mitchell (ankle).

This means that since the two wins in early September we have only consistently had the presence of four professional players Jordan Fagbola, Bradley Roscoe, Cameron Fogerty and Tom Pratt. They have been great in terms of the contribution and consistency of purpose. But as each injury has happened, we have had to look more urgently to add players. It is a tough environment to find available players with quality and experience that match the profile of players we wish to recruit.

Over the last week we had been able to add the experience and physical presence of Craig Ellison (goalkeeper), James Jones (central defence) and Jack Dyche (Attacker) to those four contracted players. But we only had seven other players fit and registered as at midnight last Thursday. They were teenagers Ricky Longato (19), Henry Carne (17), Bradley Page (19), Aiden Butterworth (18) Carter Waters (19) and attackers Mitch Candlin and Hamid Addai who are also relatively young.

With only 16 players registered we decided to sign trial players Harry Ditchfield, a 20 year old right sided player, and Fenton Green, an 18 year old central midfielder. These two players helped form the match day squad for Saturday. I know the players will be disappointed with the result, but the young players have gained invaluable experience of what is required to step up to this level.

We will need to take the pressure off both the young players, as it is a huge stretch for them at this level, and it is a tough environment for them to develop. But also, we need to recruit and add to help the senior players who have increased demands on them. I believe the home grown ‘Young Tigers’ will have a great future at the Club and in the game. But they will need time to mature, develop and grow without the undue demands of constant games at a level that stretches them beyond their current capacity.

That need to accelerate the work to strengthen was reinforced by another difficult day’s news today. We learned today that Jack Dyche will not be available due to injury, and that Mitch Candlin is leaving the club to seek a club closer to home and reduce the pressure on his work and travel commitments. I do not fear the further depletion going into Tuesday’s game as I feel the lowest point has been met, and that the process of recovery has already started.

As quickly as we have been depleted, I believe we can strengthen. The prognosis on many of the injuries are in now in the ‘return to play’ category. We expect a couple of players each week to return over the coming 3 weeks. Although their contribution has to be well managed to reduce potential of recurrence or secondary injuries we expect a greater contribution from a far greater pool of experience players.

Also, we have waited patiently for notice to be served allowing us to speak to several potential recruits and I expect positive talks over the next 24/48 hours which will yield new signings. Each new signing will also surely reinforce the team. Slowly and steadily over the remainder of this month we will get stronger and stronger.

Under 21s Grab Winner In 3-2 Win

Hyde United FC 21’s 3 – 2 Steven Gerrard Acadamy 21’s

After the previous results for both teams the expectations were high that a free flowing passing game would be displayed in the sun, however this was far from the truth. In a game that lacked any flow or quality it was difficult to differentiate between the teams and see a winner. Despite the efforts of some, getting the ball down and playing was proving to be a struggle for Hyde and managing the physicality and size of the opponents caused issues across the pitch. This changed with the introduction Dan Evans who got the ball down and started feeding Sean Abby and Ethan Robertson and Hyde started to gain a little control. Half time came and this gave the opportunity for the coaches to change some of the personnel and make some tactical alterations….I would love to say this worked but Hyde continued to struggle.

Despite all the issues with “playing the Hyde way”, the spirit and determination of Hyde started to win through. After conceding a poor goal, Hyde bounced back after a number of deflections in the SGA penalty area and Finlay Hampson equalised through a fine strike. SGA bounced back and somehow regained the lead despite the best efforts of Hyde keeper Ben Craughwell, with a great save, this bounced favourably for SGA and they scored. Hyde stepped up the pressure again and keeper Ben Craughwell then turned provider with a series of chances created by his excellent “Sam Johnstone esk” distribution, putting the forwards through one on one which they failed to capitalise on. Momentum was with Hyde and after another good break, Brian Makela pounced on a chance following a goalkeeping fumble and equalised for Hyde. With the final few minutes approaching Hyde continued to push forward and after Sean Abby won the ball in the middle of the pitch he again put Brian Makela through who calmy slotted the ball home for Hyde. It was then left to Luke Toner to manage the game out for Hyde as the forward continually held the ball up and broke up play to ensure Hyde walked away with 3 points. Nothing pretty about the football, but the spirit, determination and growth of the team is clear for all to see. Come support the lads next Sunday morning in the county cup, KO 10:30am at the Solar Project Stadium.

Under 19s Remain Undeated

Hyde United FC 19’s 2 – 0 Deans Youth 19’s

This weeks fixture saw the U19s face Deans Youth at home. Going into the game Hyde were unbeaten and were yet to concede after the first 2 matches. Hyde started on the front foot, creating a number of chances during the first half including a disallowed goal and hitting the bar on two separate occasions. On the brink of half time the visitors were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. This proved to be Deans Youth best chance of the half but didn’t come to fruition as the Hyde wall stood strong, meaning going into the break the game stayed at 0-0.

Hyde started the second half well and continued to dominate. Early on in the second half a ball through the middle split the Hyde defence allowing the Deans Youth centre forward a certain 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper. This was until centre half Jack Fisher recovered well and stopped what would have been the best chance of the game.

As the game continued more and more chances arose for Hyde and frustratingly none were taken. This was until 15 minutes to go a Flynn Pearson corner was flicked on at the near post by a Deans Youth player, beating the keeper and consequently give Hyde the lead. With the game at 1-0 Hyde gained the confidence to press on and not long after made it 2-0. A strike from right back Dylan Ryan was dashed along the ground and ended up beating the keeper from 30 yards out.

The final chance came a couple of minutes before the end. Midfielder Joseph Ohiwereime’s left footed effort from 25 years out curled onto the underside of the bar and into the back of the net, or so we thought! With the ball cannoning back from the inside of the goal the referee was deceived and the goal wasn’t given. Maybe goal line technology would have had it’s say in that one!

Hyde managed the game well for the remainder and secured the 2-0 win, making it 3 wins from 3, 8 scored and 0 conceded! Notable performances from the back line, Dylan Ryan, Cameron O’Shaughnessy, Jack Fisher and Dan Shaw allowed Hyde to pick up another clean sheet, with Dan Coogan and Adam Leah providing most of Hyde’s chances down the flanks.

Squad Update From The Manager

Manager, Jim Gannon, has provided the below squad update.

“I thought it was important to spend a little time and produce a piece that will help both inform and explain a number of football decisions that have been made in recent weeks. Since arriving at the start of last month I have had to deal with a lot of changeover and transition issues at the club. I am keenly aware at a football club the need for dynamic management is a continual process, and this week in particular has seen a number of further difficult issues arise.

The departure of the previous manager had seen some players reflect on their position at the club and leave, such as Kingsley James. It is also with sadness we have to report that Janni Lipka has departed due to his long term injury problems.

This week, similar to Tom Morris, Liam Hardy approached me and explained the difficulties he had with long distance travel and with the difficulties of balancing the pressures of work, life and family which was compromising his ability to be fully committed to Hyde United FC. We reluctantly accepted the position and Liam’s request to leave and find football much closer to home. We have tried to be as professional as possible in finding a solution and trust the speedy decision and action meant clarity for all parties.

The potential short-term difficulties of the departure of Liam, was compounded within this week by the interest of Stafford Rangers FC in Theo Bailey-Jones. When approaches are made for players, I feel that it is important to be both professional and decisive in finding the best outcome for all parties. It became clear quite quickly that both the strong interest and attractive offer from Stafford would present a very good opportunity for Theo and I accepted his request to leave. Theo has been given a real opportunity under myself and I have appreciated his efforts on our behalf, and we wish him well.

With the current injuries to several first team players and the number of fixtures in the coming weeks the staff and players available will be stretched again. They will need our full support. With that in mind we are working hard and diligently behind the scenes to bring in both short term and long-term additions. To assist in the attacking side, we have added Jack Dyche on duel-registration forms and he will be available to add to our attacking options for Saturday’s game. Our thanks to Steve Cunningham at Curzon Ashton FC for allowing the quick processing of the registration. Jack is well known to many at The Project Solar Stadium. His attacking attributes, positive energy and desire to play for the Club will surely be a plus for us.

We are also currently in the process of approaches for further additions, and I look forward to providing a further squad update nest week. I have outlined the principles of our recruitment in my programme notes this week and am looking forward to the process of building and developing a team that has a stronger football identity built on core principles of developing players, organic improvement and sustainable growth.”

In addition to Jim’s update, we have also today made another 2 signings.

Youth team player, Aiden Butterworth has signed for the first team. Aiden has scored a hatful of goals in the recent FA Youth Cup games.

We have also signed Hamid Addai, whom originally signed from the Academy in the 2019/20 season, but due to COVID never got to make an appearence.

Under 21s Bounce Back In Style

After the disappointment of consecutive defeats against Atherton and league leaders Newton Heath, Hyde bounced back in style with the first Friday night fixture of the season.  Under the flood lights and with debutant keeper Craughwell in goals and with Carne and Abby returning to action following injury,  Hyde got off to an ideal start.  Pressing the opposition from the start this caused an unforced error from the Avro defence which Luke Toner pounced upon and calmly slotted away.  This settled down the Hyde team and the free flowing football returned.  With Robertson captaining the side for the first time, Hyde put Avro under constant pressure.  Excellent wing play from both Makela and Abby saw Avro defending deeper and deeper until such time they were undone again and Kieran Owen slotting home a great move down the Hyde right hand side.  Fresh legs were introduced just before the break to ensure Hyde continued with the momentum.

Into the second half and Hyde started fast and were looking to close the game out.  After a good move down the Hyde left with Conway supplying Heathcote, he put in a deep cross for Hampson who climbed above the Avro defence to head home.  The lads kept going and pushing forward and it was the turn of Makela with a great solo effort to slot home the fourth.  Avro pressed and a series of saves from the Craughwell ensured Hyde kept their first clean sheet of the season and took the 3 points.  Special mention to the excellent support from the Hyde fans.

Under 19s Remain Undefeated & Yet To Concede

This Sundays fixture saw Hyde U19s face a familiar opponent in Saddleworth 3Ds, this time away from home. The game started off with Hyde dominating from minute one and after a multitude of chances, including a disallowed goal, the game was still level. That was however until midfielder Lennon Saycell found himself on the edge of the box midway through the first half. Taking the ball in his stride from 20 yards out he neatly placed it into the top corner making it 1-0 to Hyde. This allowed the lads to push on from here and replicate the performance in the second.

The second half began and Hyde continued to dominate. A missed penalty for Hyde not long after halftime was quickly forgotten about when Zeki Tutuncu executed a pinpoint through ball splitting the Saddleworth defence which Adam Leah got onto the end of and calmly slotted through the goalkeepers legs to make it 2-0. This allowed Hyde to control the game and with not long left they finally made it 3-0. A tidy finish from Fin Hampson allowed Hyde to secure the 3 points, remain unbeaten and record another clean sheet after the first 2 league games!

Another well deserved result for the lads leaving us 2nd in the league only on goal difference. This gives us a lot to build on and bring into the upcoming games.

Notable performances came from both Mateo Padovani and Jack Broughton in the middle of the park. The lads both brought with them maximum effort and a solid performance, massively helping the lads make it 2 wins from 2.

Upcoming Fixtures For The U21s

The future is bright at Hyde United…

The first three games of the U21s season have given us one of each result with a win, a draw and a loss.

A mixed bag then, but we either win or we learn, and one area where we’re always winning is with our development of homegrown talent.

The newly formed Under 21s team has already seen 3 of the squad break through to the 1st team, making their debuts and signing forms.

Henry Carne, who came through our junior system is one of these players, and he is joined by Bradley Page and James Thewlis.

We are beyond proud of these lads, proving just how beneficial having a brilliant grassroots set up can be, not just for the individual players, but for the club as a whole.

Our junior section is only 4 years old, and
when you consider what we have had to deal with for 18 months of that time period, the progress has been staggering.

3 Under 21s lads now regularly featuring in gaffer Jim Gannon’s match day squads, with plenty more knocking on the door, both in the 21s and further down our junior section.

Do you want to see these future Tigers for yourself?

Can you be the twelfth man for the Under 21s?

Get down to the Project Solar Stadium to support the lads in the North West Under 21 Development League and the Manchester County Cup.

Under 21s Taste Defeat

There was little to please with the performance of Hyde 21s this week as we visited Atherton. The lads really did not get out of the blocks and struggled to impart there passing game on the match. The game was untidy with both teams committing large volumes of fouls and the game suffered from the lack of continuity. Half time came and this provided time for both teams to consolidate and start a fresh.

Atherton started the second half quickly and with Hyde being down to 10 men due to a sin bin incident, they gained momentum and crafted a freekick 25 yards out. Hyde unfortunately defended this very poor and a mix up between the defence and goalkeeper gifted a simple volley to the Atherton full back who converted the chance with ease. This had a positive effect on the Hyde lads and they on the attack. Chance after chance came and went with a number of one on one chances being wasted and a brilliant save from the Atherton keeper kept out a Hyde penalty. The next home game sees Hyde entertain league leaders Newton Heath on Sunday 19th September , 10:30 KO at the Project Solar Stadium.
