New Management Team At Hyde United

The board of Hyde United are pleased to announce a new management team of Nick Spooner – manager, Martin Coyne – assistant manager, and Gavin McCann as first team coach, initially to the end of the current season. The existing backroom staff of Chris Shaw, goalkeeping coach, Nick Donnelly, strength and conditioning coach, and Lucy Graves, club physiotherapist will continue in their roles.

Nick Spooner played for Bolton Wanderers, Oldham Athletic, Charleston Battery (USA), Chester City and Leigh RMI. His league career was badly affected when he had a double leg fracture (tibia and fibula). He had a 17 year spell as a coach at Bolton, at all levels, before leaving in January 2021 and has been Head of the Foundation, Youth and Professional Development phases, as well as having stints as assistant with the first team and leading the youngest side in Bolton’s history against Coventry in the league in August 2019, alongside under-18 coach Gavin McCann.

Martin Coyne has been on the coaching staff at Hyde for some time, and has been highly instrumental in the development of the junior structure at the Club, which now comprises 34 teams of all ages. He is actively studying to gain his UEFA coaching badges, and will be mentored by Nick as he advances his managerial career aspirations.  Martin is well known to the Hyde supporters, and has taken interim charge of the team on a couple of occasions, most recently in the 2-1 victory over Warrington Town last Saturday. Martin will also take charge of the team at Morpeth tomorrow.

Gavin McCann is an ex-Premier League footballer who played 312 games for Everton, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers, with one full England cap, before his career was cut short by injury. 301 of these games were in the Premier League. Most recently he was under-18 coach at Bolton. Gavin was appointed assistant manager to Scott McNiven at Hyde in the Conference in 2012, but left in November of the following season. In 2008 he launched his own football academy in Lytham St Annes, the first one on the Fylde coast, alongside current Bamber Bridge manager Jamie Milligan and John Hills.
