Recap
Hyde United won the battle of two of the sides at the top of the Northern Premier League, after a 1-0 victory over Gainsborough Trinity at the Project Solar Stadium, to end a run of three games without a win in the league, and seal an end to the visitors unbeaten away record.
Hyde scored the only goal of the game on seven minutes. A free kick conceded by Gainsborough just inside their half allowed Liam Tongue to deliver into the box. He found the head of captain Brad Roscoe, the knock down fell into the path of Sonny Whittingham who slotted into the bottom corner.
The home side continued to dominate the chances without putting the game to bed by half time. The chances frequently came down the Hyde right with smart link up play between Harry Ditchfield and Tom Pratt. On 33 minutes Eddie Brown was found in the box from Ditchfields cross but he had more time than he realised and rushed the shot which was cleared.
Jack Redshaw had the best opportunity to double the lead on 39 minutes, when Pratt crossed from the byline and he leapt highest to head goalwards but it went narrowly over the bar.
Gainsborough’s only shot in the first half came just before the break, experienced striker Clayton Donaldson was found in the box but he fired over the bar.
The visitors came out brighter in the second half, dominating possession but failing to threaten Hyde keeper Dan Atherton, who only had a few crosses to claim, as Gainsborough failed to register a shot on target.
Jack Redshaw had the best chance to increase the scoreline, as he was found in the box, his shot goalwards was blocked bravely by Hornshaw at the far post.
Hyde boss Nick Spooner praised his sides hard work “we showed a different side to our game today, we have the ability to grind tough games out, and our work off the ball was excellent”. It was a frustrating afternoon for Trinity manager Neal Bishop who commented “we weren’t at the races today, we conceded a cheap set piece and it is the story of our last few games”.
