Hyde United are saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Ged Coyne.
A former youth player with both Manchester United and Manchester City, Ged played for the club between 1981 and 1984 and also played for a number of clubs in the Tameside area including Ashton United, Dukinfield Town, Curzon Ashton and Stalybridge Celtic.
He became assistant to Les Sutton at Mossley and eventually took over at Seel Park before joining Hyde as manager from October 1992 until November 1993. Credited with bringing through talent such as the discovery of talented attacking players in ‘dazzling’ Darren Thornton and one of the Tigers all time greats in Ged Kimmins to the club and getting the best from players already at the club such as Phil Chadwick and David Nolan, he arguably helped to set the foundations for the better years to come. His managerial spell is remembered fondly by Hyde fans due to the attacking style of play which resulted in many entertaining matches.
He also went on to manage Glossop North End and Curzon Ashton.
Ged’s brother Peter also played for Hyde and son Martin is current assistant manager to Nick Spooner.
We send all our condolences to Martin and his family and to Ged’s family and friends, we will pay tribute to him on New Years Day at home to Macclesfield.
